The popular South Korean drama Squid Game will return to Netflix on June 27 for its third and final season. Netflix announced the release date during its Next on Netflix event on Thursday. The event also showcased a short clip from the upcoming season, revealing yet another intense scene from within the games.
Squid Game, a survival thriller action series, became a global sensation in 2021. It helped boost Netflix’s subscription numbers and became the platform’s most-watched original series in its first month. Netflix reported that 142 million households watched the dark drama, which centers on people competing in a deadly game to erase financial debt.
The return of Squid Game, along with other high-profile live events like the Jake Paul-Mike Tyson boxing match, helped Netflix gain 19 million subscribers in the fourth quarter. This brought Netflix’s total global subscriber base to nearly 302 million.
The third season will be the final installment of the series, developed by Korean writer and producer Hwang Dong-hyuk. The story will again feature Lee Jung-jae as the protagonist Seong Gi-hun, who aims to stop the dystopian games.
Squid Game is one of three popular series returning to Netflix this year. Stranger Things will release its fifth and final season, while Wednesday, the Addams Family-inspired series, returns for season two.
Matt and Ross Duffer, creators of Stranger Things, mentioned shooting more than 650 hours of footage for the final season. They also shared that there would still be more stories to tell.
Netflix Chief Content Officer Bela Bajaria emphasized that with 700 million viewers, the platform can’t be just one thing.
Other highlights included Guillermo del Toro’s new film Frankenstein, Ben Affleck’s crime thriller RIP, and John Mulaney’s live show.
Tina Fey will adapt Alan Alda’s 1981 romantic comedy The Four Seasons as an eight-episode series with a star-studded cast.
