Fatima Jinnah often reminisced about her aunt, remembering her as a captivating storyteller. Her enchanting tales, filled with fairies, flying carpets, jinns, and dragons, held the attention of everyone around her. As a result, Manbai’s stories created a magical world of wonder that fascinated the young minds of her listeners.

Jinnah shared a profound connection with Manbai, so much so that around 1887, at just 11 years old, he left his home and school in Karachi to live with her in Bombay. According to noted historian and Indologist Stanley Wolpert in his renowned biography Jinnah of Pakistan, Jinnah viewed his aunt Manbai as a symbol of the elegance and enduring charm of Bombay.

Under Manbai’s care, Jinnah enrolled in a local school and was introduced to the vibrant life of Bombay. This experience left a lasting impression on him, influencing his decision to settle in the city and pursue a career in law. Consequently, this bond played a pivotal role in shaping Jinnah’s personal and professional journey

Anoushey Ashraf as Mithibai Jinnah:

Mithibai came from a respected Ismaili Khoja family in the village of Dhaffa, located along India’s western coast. In 1874, she entered into a family-arranged marriage with Jinnabhai, a struggling businessman, in the nearby town of Gondal. Mithibai was deeply cherished by her husband and held considerable influence over him. According to their daughter, Fatima Jinnah, Jinnabhai’s occasional stubbornness would often soften when met with the pleas of his young wife.

This loving and influential partnership encouraged Mithibai to accompany her husband to Karachi in search of better opportunities—a departure from the traditional practice of men making such journeys alone. Although settling in Karachi proved challenging due to modest living conditions, Mithibai demonstrated remarkable resilience and strength in the face of adversity

In Karachi, Mithibai gave birth to her first child, Mohammad Ali, and nurtured an immense affection for him throughout her life. As a loving mother, she instilled grand aspirations in him, envisioning his future greatness. She consistently encouraged him to excel in his studies, firmly believing it would lay the foundation for his success.

Mithibai’s hopes went beyond mere words. She bid her son farewell when he left for London at the age of 16, confident in his potential to achieve great things. Unfortunately, she passed away while he was overseas. Her death left Jinnah deeply grieved; however, he channeled his sorrow into a powerful determination to fulfill his mother’s dreams and aspirations.
