Veteran Bollywood actor and filmmaker Manoj Kumar, best remembered for his timeless patriotic films Purab Aur Paschim and Kranti, has passed away at the age of 87 in Mumbai. He died early Friday morning at 3:30 am due to heart-related complications. Decompensated liver cirrhosis was cited as a secondary cause, according to the medical certificate issued by Kokilaben Dhirubai Ambani Hospital.
As the news of his passing spread, tributes poured in from across the nation. Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his grief, calling Manoj Kumar a “legendary actor” and national icon. He highlighted Manoj Kumar’s ability to stir patriotic fervor through cinema, saying, “His body of work will continue to spark national pride and inspire future generations.”

Born in 1937 in Abbottabad (now in Pakistan), Manoj Kumar, originally Harikrishna Giri Goswami, started his film career in 1957. His career gained momentum over the years, especially with acclaimed roles in Gumnaam and Shaheed in 1965. These performances elevated his status in the film industry and showcased both his talent and strong sense of patriotism.


In addition to being a successful actor, Manoj Kumar also emerged as a visionary director, further expanding his impact on Indian cinema. His 1972 film Shor earned critical acclaim, and in 1975, he won Best Director for Roti Kapada Aur Makaan. The film explored issues of poverty, dignity, and survival, resonating deeply with Indian audiences.


Throughout his career,Manoj Kumar earned numerous accolades. His accolades included the Padma Shri in 1992, the Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award in 1999, and the Dadasaheb Phalke Award.
Union Minister Rajnath Singh also honored Manoj Kumar, calling him a “versatile actor” whose contributions enriched Indian culture and cinema.
